Taiwan working to promote sports tourism

Taiwan is a great place for running, cycling and other outdoor activities, but many tourists aren’t aware of what the island has to offer. To give travelers an understanding of Taiwan’s sporting culture, the Sports Affairs Council is teaming up with local governments to promote sports tourism.

The local governments of Hsinchu County, Tainan and Kinmen are joining the council in holding an exhibit at the upcoming Taipei International Travel Fair. They want to combine their sports tourism resources to add service elements to Taiwan’s sports industry.

We want to use sports to let people know what Taiwan has to offer, for example the history and culture of the 22 cities and counties, local sentiment, geography and landscape, and especially Taiwan’s street eating culture.

Each local government is involved in the sporting industry. People who love sports can visit the three areas and choose from cycling or golfing, or they can join an Ironman competition or marathon.

For example, in Kinmen County cycling around the seaside is very famous. In Tainan, meanwhile, we can integrate the city’s history and culture as the former capital with cycling and running activities.

Lonely Planet recently named Taiwan the world’s ninth best travel destination. To offer more options, officials hope to combine sporting and tourism so travelers can discover even more of what Taiwan has to offer.
