吃霸王餐 Dine and dash
吃霸王餐，白吃白喝後逃逸事件不時發生，國內外皆然。吃霸王餐的英文就是本文的標題，如 A couple dined and dashed at an upscale restaurant in Taipei last night but got caught one hour later. (一對情侶昨晚在台北一家高檔餐廳吃霸王餐後逃逸，但一小時後被逮)。必須注意的是，dine and dash 的過去式和過去分詞有時亦寫成 dine and dashed。
除當動詞外，dine and dash 亦可當名詞用，如 They went to the restaurant and pulled/had a dine and dash. (他們去那家餐廳吃霸王餐)。若將這三個字以連字號連接，則可當形容詞用，如 a dine-and-dash couple (吃霸王餐的情侶)；a dine-and-dash customer (吃霸王餐的顧客)。
事實上，這個片語行之有年，相信許多人對它並不陌生。本文並非要告訴大家吃霸王餐的英文，而是要探討 dine and dash 的同義詞。就筆者所知，目前與其同義的用語還有 "dine and ditch"、"dine and run"、"chew and screw"、"run the check" 及 "mash and dash"，但維基百科還列出 "lick and split"、"eat and fleet"、"chomp and romp" 和 "grub and snub" 等同義詞，只是筆者尚未查到它們的應用實例。不過，根據 Urban Dictionary，dine and dash 與 mash and dash 還意為「發生一夜情」(動詞) 和「一夜情」(one night stand) (名詞)，亦即與某人嘿咻後馬上拍拍屁股走人的行徑。
值得一提的是，中文對於吃霸王餐還有一個更通俗的稱呼，那就是「跑單」。對照上述的英文用語，跑單不就是 run the check 的直譯嗎! 真是太有趣了! 這裡的 check 意為「(餐廳的) 帳單」。
