很多學生都分享過他們把英文「張冠李戴」的慘痛經驗。

在路上開車，遇到警察攔車說pull over，還以為他要你「拉什麼」？其實他是要你停下來。英國人說Give me a ring. 可不是要你跟他求婚，"ring"是電話鈴聲，叫你打個電話給他而已。Drop me a line. 更不是要你排隊站好，是留個口信。老美說，Mary is expecting in June. 你別以為Mary在期待六月，這是在說她六月要生小孩了。

哇，怎麼那麼複雜？其實搞懂意思，你會有茅塞頓開的感覺。一起來看看以下十個例子。

1、be on the map
The Group has been on the map for over ten years.（該集團已經出名十幾年了。）
be on the map表示著名。看看很多城市地圖，只有著名的企業才能標在上面。

2、face the music
You’ve been caught cheating, now you must face the music.（你的騙局已經被戳破，這下子吃不了兜著走。）
face the music表示自食其果。馬上就要吃苦頭，還說是聽音樂，這是英式幽默！

3、be off-limits
The public transportation have been off-limits for several days.（公共運輸系統已經停止運作好幾天了。）
be off-limits意思是關門（closed）或不營業（not available）。

4、be above/over one’s head
Most of what the speaker said was above my head, so I fell asleep.（演講者說的我大多不懂，所以就睡著了。）
be above/over one’s head在這裡表示不能為某人所理解。

5、be after/at/onto someone to do something
My son has been after me for a year to buy him a laptop.（我兒子纏了一年要我買一台筆電。）
be after/at/onto someone to do something這裡意思是一再要求某人去幹什麼事，不達目的絕不甘休。

6、be by
I’ll be by in the morning and see what I can do.（我明天早上過來看看能幫點什麼。）
這裡be by表示拜訪或到達之意。

7、bring something into focus
Now that all sides of the question are in focus, can we please reach a decision? （既然事情的各方面都清楚了，我們做個決定吧？）
be in focus表示事情清楚明白，而bring something into focus則表示使事情清楚明白。

8、get by
I’ll get by with a bicycle until we can afford a car. (在買得起小汽車之前騎自行車也將就了。) 這裡get by表示日子過得去，就是口頭上常說的湊合、將就。

9、put up
All the office workers believe that the appointment of the new director wasput up. (辦公室的人都知道新主任的任命已經內定了。)
這裡put up表示秘密安排某事。

10、Hang in there. = Don't give up. = Keep trying.（再堅持一下。)
