The ultimate superspy

The creators of 'The Bourne Legacy' hope to create a 007-style franchise

James Bond turns 50 on film this year, but he doesn't look a day over 007. He's still got the look. He's still got the cars. And he shows no sign of losing his appeal with the ladies. James Bond will be back in theaters in November with "Skyfall," the 23rd film in the spy franchise and the third movie starring Daniel Craig as 007.

Bond, however, has had some competition lately in the form of the "Mission: Impossible" movies, Liam Neeson's action films and the countless superhero flicks fighting for big bucks on the big screen. However, it is the Jason Bourne series that is putting up the biggest challenge to 007's status as the top movie action hero.

"The Bourne Legacy" is the first time that the successful franchise has a new star — Jeremy Renner. The three previous "Bourne" films starred Matt Damon in the lead role, so the pressure is on Renner to continue the success of the series. If Renner is able to capture the hearts of moviegoers, then Bourne could pose a big challenge to Bond's status as the top spy movie series. Many people have even noted that the Daniel Craig 007 films seem to have borrowed their style from the "Bourne" series.

Still, the young "Bourne" franchise has a long way to go to match the success of James Bond's movie empire. Since the first 007 film, "Dr. No" in 1962, Bond films have earned US$1.6 billion (approximately NT$48 billion) in North America alone. "There are plenty of imitators, but Bond really is the first main character that was an antihero," said "Skyfall" producer Michael Wilson.

Wilson, who has been producing Bond films since 1979's "Moonraker," knows how to reinvent a franchise with a new leading man. "Sean (Connery, who played six Bonds in the 1960s and early 1970s) was a tough guy; he set the tone," Wilson said. Roger Moore, who anchored seven films from 1973 to 1985, "played the role in a funnier way," Wilson explained. "Roger was lighthearted."

Wilson said Timothy Dalton (two Bonds, 1987-1989) "brought it down to Earth" by playing a relatable human character. Pierce Brosnan (four Bonds, 1995-2002) "brought a touch of charm." Craig, who is on his third Bond go-around, "is a great actor who takes it back to the Sean Connery days," Wilson noted.

Despite the challenge posed by Jason Bourne, Wilson said that friendly competition never hurts: "I'm happy about the success of the 'Bourne' series. The worst thing for anyone is a bad movie. If you see a good action movie, you're in the mood to see another."
