As a kid, Chris Pine used to be afraid of the Boogeyman. Now he fights one on the big screen. The 32-year-old American actor is taking on his first voice-acting role as Jack Frost in the DreamWorks animated film "Rise of the Guardians," which will be released in Taiwan on Nov. 30.

There are some high expectations for this magical tale, especially considering that it cost a fantastical US$145 million (approximately NT$4.2 billion) to produce. For Pine, however, the most magical part is getting to see his vocals combined with the animators' work. "By the time you get to see it all put together, it's many, many months, even years down the road. I saw one version of it three months ago and was astounded by how unique the art looked," the actor said.

Given the fact that this animated film brings together many of children's favorite bedtime story characters, some critics have described it as "The Avengers" for kids, a comparison that Pine is happy to hear. "It is definitely like 'The Avengers' for kids. It's every character that you knew growing up — from Santa Claus to the Sandman to the Tooth Fairy to the Easter Bunny — all brought together as this fantastic crime-fighting team."

There's no doubt that Pixar has set the benchmark for computer-animated films. But with smash-hit series including "Kung Fu Panda" and "Shrek," DreamWorks Animation has forged its own path by creating laugh-out-loud hits featuring classic fairy-tale characters. Pine was delighted to be offered a role in one of these adventures. "These different legends that we've all known as children growing up, no matter where you are or where you live, all come together in DreamWorks' films. This particular movie is a timeless story about belief and the power of imagination," he said.

For Pine, starring in a film designed for younger kids was a rewarding experience. "This and what I called my big hair picture, 'The Princess Diaries 2,' definitely appeal to a younger audience. I'm really, really excited to show my nephew and all the kids in my life this film. For me growing up, Christmas time was always the most fantastic, exciting time of year, and you'd stay up until three in the morning. You'd hear your parents wrapping presents in the other room but you knew that also, maybe, they were in collusion with Santa Claus."

The choice of the movie's villain, the Boogeyman, also clearly struck a chord with Pine, who believes it will both scare and excite younger audience members. "I don't know any kid that's not afraid at some point of going to bed with the lights off. That's why they make nightlights. It even took me some time to get used to it."

And what gives the American actor nightmares? "I'm not a fan of spiders. I watched the movie 'Arachnophobia,' which was definitely in the top three worst choices I have made in my life." As Pine's first animated film prepares to hit the big screen, however, the actor has few things to worry about.
