DEALING WITH FAME

It has been a rapid rise to superstardom for Chris Pine. Before 2009, few people had heard of the strikingly handsome young actor. That all changed when he was cast in the reboot of the immensely popular sci-fi franchise "Star Trek." With the possible exception of James Bond, few roles in the entire movie industry are likely to come with as much attention, expectation and publicity as that of James T. Kirk, the legendary captain of the starship Enterprise.

While Pine has enjoyed becoming one of the biggest and most high-profile young actors working today, the "Star Trek" star has also had to learn the importance of setting healthy boundaries in Hollywood and keeping his good friends close.

Pine noticeably dimmed when revisiting a moment at the Cannes Film Festival when he and his girlfriend, model Dominique Piek, posed on the storied red carpet together.

Pine regrets that moment, mostly because it has led to public discussion about his love life. "It was not something we thought about, quite honestly," he said. "I thought we were literally going to go in the back door. But there was really no great thought; we were not forming some sort of strategy. She's a great girl, and I think I'll just leave it at that."

Since achieving stardom, Pine has done his best to chart his path through Hollywood. "I'm guilty of playing the 'what if' game, or 'if I'd done that,' or 'why aren't I here?'" he said, calling himself a perfectionist. "But at the end of the day, I'm so firmly aware of how difficult it is to make a living doing what I do. I'm at a level I never thought I'd get to, and I'm working at that level. I know people that I never thought I'd know; I've worked with people I never thought I'd work with."

Along with the "Star Trek" sequel, which is titled "Star Trek into Darkness" and is due to be released in May next year, Pine's next projects include a new Jack Ryan film, which he is currently shooting with female lead Keira Knightley and director Kenneth Branagh.

In fact, photographers recently took unauthorized pictures of Pine and Knightley while they were shooting the film. Pine is not too annoyed about it, however. "I saw those guys with the huge telephoto lenses in the pouring rain; those poor guys! They were getting drenched. I don't feel too much pity for them. It's a lot of fun shooting the film though, and Keira's really lovely."

Pine, who has won rave reviews for his performances in plays, also said he'd "absolutely" return to working on the stage. So Captain Kirk's future is moving forward at a rapid pace. "The problem is that I'm very impatient," he said. "It's like, I can't believe I'm 32 and I can't believe I'm not 22. That all went by in the blink of an eye."
