Living in a big city like Taipei is often a stressful experience. There are times when we all wish we could escape to the countryside and live a simpler lifestyle. However, it is important to remember that Taiwan is an island blessed with incredible natural beauty and that, even during these cold winter months, there are plenty of places within an hour's drive of the capital that allow us to both soak up some natural scenery and enjoy the incredible culture of this remarkable country. In fact, the area around Keelung on Taiwan's north coast is a case in point. Here you will find a number of stunning places that will warm your heart and reinvigorate your senses.

Keelung Maritime Plaza

Keelung Maritime Plaza, a beautiful wooden deck that offers an incredible view of Keelung Bay, is a mere 40-minute bus ride from Taipei Main Station. Weather permitting, this plaza offers visitors a complete view of the entire bay. During certain times of the year, you can also see enormous cruise ships, such as Star Cruises' Aquarius, berthing beside the bay. For this reason, the area is sometimes filled with foreign tourists, giving the plaza a truly international flavor. On clear days, you will often find people soaking up the maritime ambience or studying the beautiful public artworks on display. If it is raining, which it often is in Keelung, the plaza is still an ideal place to sit in a coffee shop and enjoy the refreshing sea air.

Badouzih Coastal Park

Located on a small peninsula to the northeast of Keelung City, Badouzih Coastal Park is a picturesque example of Taiwan's remarkable coastline. Walking down the stairs to enter the park, you will find the starting point of a footpath that leads to Wangyou Valley. Strolling along the footpath, which is surrounded by emerald-green mountains and the dark-blue sea, is sure to relieve all of your stress. At dusk, the area is always filled with people waiting to capture the beauty of the sunset, and this is certainly the best time to visit the park. As the setting sun merges with the ocean, golden-yellow light seems to dye the seawater. In Chinese, "Wangyou" means "to forget one's sorrows" — a very appropriate title considering the remarkable backdrop.

Chaojing Park

Although it is not far from Badouzih Coastal Park, Chaojing Park offers visitors a very different feel. Originally a junkyard, the area has now become a picturesque location for people to relax. On one side of the park, you can walk right up to the ocean — a favorite spot for locals who enjoy fishing in the clear waters. On the other side, there is a vast meadow where parents can stroll and children can fly kites. At night, from across the water, the lights from Jiufen shine like golden stars. And if the moon is bright and the sky is clear, the surface of the water looks like so many gleaming mirrors.
