Baimiwong Fort

Compared to the other historic forts in the area, Baimiwong is relatively small. However, what it lacks in size, it makes up for in breathtaking views. Featuring long-standing gun emplacements and rolling green hills, the Qing Dynasty fort is also an ideal site to watch fishing boats heading to Keelung Islet or huge cargo ships departing from Keelung Harbor. On the left side of the fort you will see three enormous chimneys extending from a thermal power plant, a landmark in Keelung, while the back of the fort offers a perfect view of the harbor. The historical site and prosperous harbor form an interesting contrast, providing visitors with a fascinating perspective on the passing of time. On weekdays, few people tend to visit the fort, making it an excellent place to collect your thoughts and enjoy some splendid isolation.

Jiufen Old Street

Though officially a part of New Taipei City's Ruifang District, Jiufen is located not far from Keelung. Jiufen Old Street is one of the most famous tourist spots in Northern Taiwan — and for good reason. This small village, which is located on a mountainside, became famous as the place where the movie "A City of Sadness" was filmed. However, many Japanese tourists also visit it as it was used as a model for the village in the Oscar-winning animated film "Spirited Away."

The old-fashioned buildings give Jiufen a wonderful nostalgic atmosphere. And when the sky darkens, red lanterns light the streets and form a romantic nighttime scene. Although chain stores have replaced many of the traditional shops and stalls, Jiufen Old Street is still the perfect place to try some traditional Taiwanese snacks. Any visitor to Jiufen would be remiss to leave without trying treats such as yu yuan (taro ball), Chinese herbal rice cake or taro sweet potato. And no winter trip to Jiufen is complete without a cup of green tea, enjoyed in a café overlooking the surrounding mountains.

Miaokou Night Market & Badouzih Night Market

Night markets are the beating heart of Taiwan's nightlife. Located near Keelung Railway Station, Miaokou night market is undoubtedly the most bustling nighttime attraction in the area. Numerous food stalls line this market. The most famous snacks in the market are Dinpientso, pao pao ice and crabs cooked in butter. However, as it's a popular tourist spot, the prices in Miaokou can be excessive.

Those on a budget should check out Badouzih night market. You're unlikely to find this night market, which only opens on weekends, in a tourist guidebook, but it is a perfect example of a traditional Taiwanese night market. The best snacks to try there include hot-plate beef, kabobs, freshly made juice and salted chicken.
