OSCAR GLORY

"Les Miserables" is groundbreaking in a number of ways, most notably in the way that the singing was recorded. For this movie, Hooper insisted that all the singing in the movie be performed by the actors live on the set rather than weeks earlier in a recording studio, which is the normal way musicals are filmed. That was a wonderful decision as it allowed the actors to bring real feeling to celebrated songs such as "Who Am I?" and "One Day More."

Hooper said he believes that "singing gives access to a deeper emotional range," but that doesn't mean that this was in any way easy. The director revealed that the actors wore two radio microphones outside their costumes so that no matter which way their heads turned, the sound would be accurately recorded. After the movie was finished, the microphones had to be "digitally painted out" of every single scene. All that painstaking work was definitely worthwhile as it makes the singing as intense and personal as possible.

After Valjean leaves prison, the scene shifts to 1823 and a town in France where, helped by a kindly bishop, Valjean has taken on a new identity and become a wealthy factory owner. His comfortable life, however, is about to end.

For one thing, Javert turns up in town, and he suspects that something is wrong. For another, one of Valjean's female employees, Fantine, is wrongfully fired and ends up selling her hair and her teeth.

Anne Hathaway, who plays Fantine, is the film's outstanding performer. She does such an amazing job of singing the musical's most famous song, "I Dreamed a Dream," that she steals the show. Being cast in this film was the icing on the cake of an amazing year for Hathaway, who also recently played Catwoman in "The Dark Knight Rises." The American actress is nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars for her performance in "Les Miserables" and she is the clear favorite to win.

Being nominated for this film also has a special meaning for Hathaway. When she was young, her mom played Fantine in a touring production of "Les Miserables."

"When I got cast, my mother gave me her cast jacket from when she did the tour, and I wore it on my first day of filming," Hathaway explained. "I've received an extraordinary and unusual amount of love for playing this character. And I'm so very grateful for every second of it."

Forced to flee town, Valjean vows to raise Fantine's daughter, Cosette, as his own. First, however, he has to pry her away from Monsieur and Madame Thenardier, played by Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter.

All these plot strands come together nine years later in Paris in 1832, where Cosette, now a beautiful young woman (played by Amanda Seyfried), catches the eye of passionate would-be revolutionary Marius (played brilliantly by Eddie Redmayne).

Because it is so popular and is based on such a classic musical and book, the film of "Les Miserables" would have been very easy to make a mess of. However, this is definitely not what has happened here.

This is an outstanding film that delivers the same emotion as the musical. The film is truly worthy of its eight Oscar nominations. You may walk into the theater doubting that you can put up with hours and hours of singing, but you are likely to leave with the film's wonderful songs stuck in your head.
