A MAN ON A MISSION
In order for Kosinski to fulfill his vision of bringing sci-fi back into the daylight, he needed something beyond his bold concept: a superstar. And luckily for him, he found one almost immediately.
"I was at Comic-Con promoting 'Tron: Legacy,' but I was also introducing the idea of 'Oblivion,' which I was hoping to make into a comic book at that time. And the day after I got back from Comic-Con, I got a call from Tom Cruise's agent, saying that Tom had heard about the idea for 'Oblivion' and wanted to talk to me about it," Kosinski explained. "I met him and I pitched him the full story, which was only in my head at that point. And at the end of the meeting, he said, 'Let's do this.'"
It may sound strange for a superstar like Tom Cruise to so quickly commit to a movie, but talk to anyone who knows the star and they'll tell you that this is how he works. Those who know him best describe a man with a focus and intensity so powerful and relentless that he can almost will what he wants into being.
"I like to say that Tom can control the weather with his mind. I never seemed to have bad weather when I was shooting outdoors with Tom," said Christopher McQuarrie, who has known Cruise for many years and directed him in the thriller "Jack Reacher."
"He's a funny guy and kind of goofy when you get to know him," said Brad Bird, who directed Cruise in "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol." "But there's also some sadness in him that he can't just walk around. I was with him several times when he tried. Sooner or later, a group would collect around him. When he's with the public like that, he's grateful, so he is pleasant and signs autographs and stands for photos. But he can't go out into the world and I think he would like to."
Maybe this is the reason why Cruise was the ideal man to play the main character in "Oblivion" — a man who stands alone on Earth. "This character is a man who has a deep connection with Earth and who loves Earth, so he doesn't want to leave," Cruise said at the premiere of the movie. "This story is science fiction, but it is also about people. It is a very human story."
Cruise also noted that he was drawn to the story due to its exciting and surprising premise. "There are twists in this film right up until the last frame of the movie, so I'm very excited for audiences to see it. I know people are going to love it," Cruise said.
