Cirque du Soleil's magnificent Michael Jackson show arrives in Taipei

A black sequin jacket. Sparkling gloves. White socks. These items evoke perhaps the most famous entertainer of all time: Michael Jackson. And although Jackson has passed away, world-renowned circus touring company Cirque du Soleil is offering residents of Taiwan the opportunity to relive the greatness of the man known as the "King of Pop."

From June 28 to 30, Cirque du Soleil will hold five performances of its show "Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour" at Taipei Arena. The show honors Jackson with dance and acrobatic performances set to some of the star's most iconic songs, including "Dancing Machine" and "Smooth Criminal."

The show recreates Jackson's presence, said Jonathon Moffett, Jackson's drummer for more than 30 years and a performer on this show, at a pre-show press conference. "This show encompasses all of his career, and everything that he worked hard for in his spirit and in his music," he said.

Neelanthi Vadivel, artistic director of the show, explained that the show was built to capture a certain tempo, starting with ballads and then building up to the most exciting songs. "The audience is on a roller-coaster ride, but that's the point. You leave feeling a little overwhelmed," she added.

Michael Jackson was not only a performer, but an inspiration. Those who worked with him experienced a life-changing metamorphosis that made them better artists. Guitarist Jon Myron Clark, who went on tour with Jackson for his "Bad" album and who will be performing at the Cirque du Soleil shows in Taipei, said in a recent interview that working with Jackson significantly changed his life as a musician. And amputee dancer Jean Sok, who also performs in the Cirque du Soleil show, revealed that he is honored to be able to share his love for Jackson through dance.

Vadivel elaborated on what the show has to offer. "This show is as much about celebrating Cirque du Soleil and Cirque du Soleil's creation as it is about celebrating Michael Jackson. It's a tribute. It's a gift to Michael Jackson fans, so I hope that they feel that," said Vadivel.
