**詢問簽約期的長度

A: What is the duration of the lease?
A: 請問要簽約多久呢?
B: It requires a one-year lease.
B: 需要簽一年。 

◆大部分的地方都需要房客簽上至少半年的租約。如果簽一年的話, 很多地方還會提供一些所謂的 move-in special, 比方頭一個月的房租只要一半等優惠行動。
視住的地方而定, 有些在約期滿後就可改成 month-to-month rental agreement, 也就是所謂的「按月租屋」。

**詢問公寓內是否有洗衣設備

A: Are there laundry facilities on site? 
A: 請問公寓內有洗衣設備嗎?
B: Yes. There are two washers and two dryers in the building.
B: 有! 裡面有二個洗衣機和二個烘衣機。 

◆多數的公寓建築物裡都附有公共洗衣房 (laubdry room) 供房客使用。這些機器都是 coin operated laundry machines , 需要投弊, 而且在固定時間內(通常早上八點到晚上十點間)才能使用的。有的租屋設備較好, 有 laundry facility in unit, 就不需要趕時間, 或投錢弊了。

**詢問住處的交通問題

A: Is the apartment close to the bus stops and the shops?
A: 公寓地點離公車站和商店近嗎?
B: Yes. only 5 minutes' walk to the bus stops. In the shopping center just across the street, there are a Target, a Safeway and a movie theater
B: 是的。離公車站只需步行五分鐘。對街的購物中心裡有一家 Target, Safeway 和電影院。 

◆對於沒有車子的朋友來說, 租屋地點的交通是否方便是非常重要的一個考慮條件。美國不像台灣或內地, 商店區和住宅區是完全分開的, 如果沒有車子, 最好選離公車站近的地方。

**要求看房子

A: Can I see the apartment? When is good for you?
A: 我可以看一下公寓嗎? 什麼時候對您比較方便呢?
B: We are here until 5 o'clock this evening. You can come today if you'd like.
B: 我們今天開到傍晚五點。如果你想要的話, 你今天就可以來! 

◆親自看房子, 順便觀察一下附近的環境當然是很重要的。這裡很多較大型的公寓都有個公寓管理處 leasing office, 管理公寓內簽約與維修等大大小小的事情。

**詢問繳房租及開支票的問題

A: When do I pay the rent and whom do I write the check to?
A: 什麼時候付房租呢? 還有支票該開給誰呢?
B: The rent is due on the 1st of each month. You'll have 3 days to make your payment. Please write the check to Daisy Lee.
B: 房租每月一號到期。你有三天的時間付(你的房租)。請把支票開給李黛西。 

◆"due" 是到期的意思, 圖書館的書到期、孕婦的生產日都是用"due" 這個字。按時付房租是很重要的, 如果晚付了, 通常會被罰錢(late fees)的。
◆口語中, 開支票也可說成 "cut a check"。支票上的"Pay to the order of" 欄填的是收款人的名字。金額部分, 除了阿拉伯數字外, 還須用英文再填寫一次。就像填寫中文支票時要在金額後加個「整」字外, 寫英文支票時也要加個"only"。如果你還是不太清楚如何寫支票給黛西的話, 請按這裡。
