相對於「perhaps」、「maybe」、「probably」「possibly」, 我們用英語表達「可能」時,似乎忽略了一個地道的用語 ──「likely」。

「likely」是一個很好用的字,因為它變化多,加一個「un」在前,變成「unlikely」,加「quite」、「most」等字在前,又可加強減弱其程度,Not likely,意思是不行!這些都是「perhaps」、「maybe」、「probably」「possibly」不易達至的功能。

「likely」是形容詞,也是副詞。「likely」形容詞,用法:

 

  • The company is being forced to reduce staff and I fear I'm a likely candidate (for redundancy). (公司被迫裁員,恐怕我是冗員之一。)

     

直接搭配上人或物也可以: 

 

  • He is the most likely candidate for the next CEO. (他最有機會成為下一任執行長。)

     

  • This is the most likely property to be acquired by the Group。(這是集團最有可能收購的財產。」

     

副詞的用法:

 

  • Tom will get here most likely at about 9:00 a.m. after his red-eye. (湯姆搭紅眼班機,最有可能早上十點左右來到。)

     

最後,「不可能」也不難表達:

 

  • He is very ill and unlikely to recover.(他病得很重,不太可能康復了。)
