用中文聊天，四字成語朗朗上口應該不是難事。很多中文成語一旦轉成英文，就失去味道，像「勢如破竹」、「瓜田李下」....都有它的歷史典故。英文成語想必蘊涵著西方的文化脈絡。

我們今天來看看幾個以想像力配對出來中西成語。用想像力做配對，你會發現其中的趣味。

1. 痛失良機 Let something slip through one's fingers.

想像一下，眼睜睜看東西從指尖流失，是不是有「痛失良機」的那種惋惜感？

• This is my big chance to make a career in journalism. I can't let it slip through my fingers. 這是我往新聞界發展的大好機會，我不能錯失良機。

2. 千載難逢once in a blue moon

你幾曾看過"藍色的月亮"？用once in a blue moon形容千載難逢的機會，真是有想像力。

• It was an opportunity that comes once in a blue moon. 這種機會來一次可太難了。

3. 單槍匹馬 play a lone hand

"單槍匹馬"或"單打獨鬥"，都可以用play a lone hand，lone原來的意思就是沒有伴、自己來的意思。

• When investing in a business, he always likes to play a lone hand. 在投資時，他總喜歡單槍匹馬的去幹。

4. 出師不利 get off on the wrong foot

Get off 有“動身”、“起步”的意思，on the wrong foot 有“用錯了腳”，整個片語基本意思是“一開始就錯了”，常引申出“一開始就不順利”、“一開始就犯錯”、“一開始給人不好的印象”、“一開始就把事弄糟了”等意思。

• His idea was good, but he got off on the wrong foot when he started doing it. 他的主意原本不錯，可一開始就出師不利。
• The project started off on the wrong foot. 這個專案一開始就不對了。

5. 曇花一現 a flash in the pan

Flash意思是“閃光”，pan指的是“淘金盤”，如果在淘金盤裡發現有閃光一亮，就表示有金屑在裡邊。當然這種閃光只是一閃而過，不可能持續很長時間，所以後來人們用a flash in the pan來比喻某事曇花一現，只是短暫的成功。

• That singer was only a flash in the pan. He disappeared into the air after having made one or two records. 那個歌星也只是曇花一現，出了幾張唱片就銷聲匿跡了。

6. 寡不敵眾 be outnumbered

Outnumber這個字看來簡單，但不好用對。別人人數比我們多，就叫outnumber，要用被動，be outnumbered by。

• I notice that the public is outnumbered by the police force. 我發現群眾的數量遠遠低於警力。
