Andrew Garfield discusses the joys and responsibilities of playing Spider-Man

During his past two appearances at Comic-Con, the world's biggest convention for lovers of comic books and movies, Andrew Garfield has put on his Spider-Man tights for movie panels about his lead role as the superhero. He's obviously happy to put on the colorful costume for fellow Spider-Man fans. However, during his on-screen work — which movie-goers will see when "The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro" hits theaters here on April 23 — he's not totally comfortable. And for good reason, as Peter Parker, the science geek underneath the mask, isn't comfortable being Spider-Man, either.

"As soon as you're comfortable with this kind of responsibility and this kind of job, then you won't take it as seriously as you should and you won't put as much care, attention and effort into it. So I guess I have the intention of not being comfortable," Garfield explained.

"The Amazing Spider-Man," which was released in 2012, retold the origins of Spider-Man with a different tone and a different take on the character. In the sequel, the filmmakers didn't have to retread any old ground, Garfield noted, "so we can start our own adventure and bring our Spider-Man character to life."

The first movie explored the human consequences of a real teenage kid having cool superpowers, and that foundation gives Spider-Man "more of a chance to express his abilities in a more interesting way," Garfield said.

But in this new film, the hero gets a very dangerous new nemesis with a similar origin in Max Dillon (played by Jamie Foxx). A nerdy loner, Dillon is saved by Spider-Man and is determined to find his own way to make himself stand out. One disastrous experiment involving electric eels later and super-villain Electro is born. "Electro is a god in terms of the power that he has, and to be faced with that creates a whole host of problems, obstacles and drama," Garfield said.

But Electro is not the only villain that Spider-Man must deal with in this sequel. Parker also realizes that secrets involving his family are coming to the fore when old pal Harry Osborn (played by Dane DeHaan) informs him that his father's Oscorp Industries have him under surveillance. Parker also gets a message left by his dead father explaining that there is some very shady stuff going on at Oscorp. This leads to some epic battles during which Spider-Man must overcome Electro, Green Goblin and Rhino, a villain inside a large, horned piece of armor.
