Music star is eager to take pop in a more upbeat direction

Whether or not you're a music fan, you've almost certainly heard the infectious song over and over again. "Happy" is Pharrell Williams' global smash hit. When U.S. talk show host Oprah Winfrey sat down with the singer to talk about how the song exploded when the video arrived last November, she asked him to take a look at a montage of fan videos from around the world. The montage featured people dancing and singing along to the upbeat tune in Dakar, Germany, Malawi and many other places. It reduced the pop star to tears.

It wasn't long before people started sharing the touching interview on social media. "Makes me cry, too!" said Oprah as Pharrell wiped tears away. He said: "It's overwhelming because it's like I love what I do, and I just appreciate the fact that people have believed in me for so long that I could make it to this point to feel that."

This emotional moment perfectly captures why Pharrell has become one of the biggest music stars in the world. Known for his humility, he refuses to write songs about himself, and not because he's particularly shy or private. "I'm a regular guy," he explained. "I don't find myself that interesting. I have the same story people have heard a million times."
