THE QUEST FOR GLORY

Soccer is more than a sport in Brazil; it is a religion and a way of life. Therefore, it is perhaps unsurprising that local fans expect nothing less than for their team to win the World Cup. With a squad featuring talented young players such as Neymar, Brazil are considered the favorites to win the tournament. The team's coach, Luiz Felipe Scolari, also previously led Brazil to victory in 2002. The question most experts are asking is whether this team of young stars will be able to handle the huge expectations of their passionate home fans.

If they are to win the 2014 World Cup, Brazil will also have to overcome one of the greatest teams in the history of international soccer: Spain. The Spanish national side won the last World Cup in 2010 as well as the 2008 and 2012 European Football Championships. However, many experts feel that this six-year period of dominance may be about to come to an end. Some of the stars who led Spain to those triumphs, such as Xavi, are now entering the final stages of their careers. On the other hand, it would be a huge mistake to write off Spain's chances as they have a squad filled with proven winners.

Another side many soccer experts have picked to win the tournament is Argentina. The team boasts the most impressive array of attacking talent in the competition, with stars like four-time world soccer player of the year Lionel Messi. It would also be a mistake to count out the German team as many of its stars play together at club level with Bayern Munich. However, it is worth pointing out that no team from Europe has won the World Cup when it has been played in North or South America.

There are also a few dark horses that could lift the trophy in July. The two teams that many commentators believe could upset the favorites are Belgium and Portugal. Belgium, the small European country of 11 million people, has produced an exceptional generation of young players, such as Eden Hazard, that has taken world soccer by storm. Meanwhile, Portugal's side is led by the reigning world player of the year, Cristiano Ronaldo. Although most fans expect Portugal to fall short at the World Cup, any team that has a player of Ronaldo's caliber has the potential to go all the way.

When the World Cup kicks off, fans can expect a dazzling festival of soccer featuring shocking upsets, gripping tension and unbelievable feats of athleticism. And regardless of which team emerges victorious, the one thing that is certain is that the world will be watching.
