The “Central Taiwan discount info network” went online on July 30, and “Roaming central Taiwan — LOHAS cycling” is the platform’s inaugural event series being promoted from July to September. The event brings together seven vast tourist biking routes in Greater Taichung, Miaoli, Changhua and Nantou counties and provides special discounts at 120 local businesses.

The site (http://www.tcecoupon.com.tw) was jointly planned and designed by the Executive Yuan’s Central Taiwan Joint Services Center, the Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications and four local city and county governments. Center chairwoman Hou Hui-hsien says that the central and local governments have spent NT$7.8 billion (US$260 million) over the past five years to construct the bike paths. Only around 900km of bike paths existed in Taiwan in 2008, she says, adding that by the end of last year that number had reached 4,000km, and it is expected that another NT$1.2 billion will be spent by the end of next year, further helping to create a veritable bike path network.

Between July and September Greater Taichung, Miaoli, Changhua and Nantou counties are starting off by promoting seven tourist bike path routes, including those along Greater Taichung’s Houfong and Dongfong districts, Miaoli County’s “green corridor” of tung tree blossoms, Changhua County’s Baguashan, and Nantou County’s “fall-in-love” Jiji Township path and a bike path in Shuili Township’s Checheng Village.

By downloading e-coupons from the Web site or getting printed coupons from any major visitor information center, you can obtain super discounts at 120 local businesses in the region. Commemorative scarves are also available for anyone who collects stamps after riding on bike paths in three of the different counties or cities. Commemorative items are also available if you spend at least NT$500 at a business offering discounts or purchases of any amount at two or more businesses.

Greater Taichung Deputy Mayor Tsai Ping-kun says the two routes being offered in Taichung are the only unique bike paths that combine bikes and horses. The “Two horse tourism festival” commences at the Houli Horse Farm on Saturday and will last for two weeks.

Changhua Deputy County Commissioner Lin Tien-fu says that since Changhua County’s YouBike public bike rental system went online on May 22, the bikes have been used between 100,000 and 200,000 times, showing how much people like them. Greater Taichung also recently launched its public bike system iBike.

Giant Bicycle president King Liu says that taking a car is too fast and walking is too slow, while biking is the only way to travel with any real degree of depth and that bikes are the best mode of transportation for traveling around central Taiwan.
