A five-year-old boy, after playing computer games on his cell phone for nearly five or six hours per day continuously for two weeks, started blinking when watching the TV, and his mother took him to the hospital. The boy, who was not previously nearsighted, was diagnosed with myopia with minus seven diopters. Fortunately, it was pseudomyopia, a temporary condition. Hung Chi-ting, chief of Ophthalmology at Kaohsiung Armed Forces General Hospital, said pseudomyopia can develop into myopia if medical attention is not sought in good time.

Hung also stressed that overindulgence in electronic products is very likely to strain the ciliary muscles in the eyes, which can lead to myopia. Although children’s ciliary muscles are more flexible and therefore more likely to make a full recovery or to become mild myopia if treated with muscle relaxants, pseudomyopia could still turn into irreversible myopia if treatment is not given in time.
