最近才剛結束的索契冬季奧運圓滿落幕，不知道大家有沒有follow這次的賽事呢? 跟各位分享一下，索契冬奧是有史以來花費最高的一次冬奧比賽，因為當初在2007年決定將主辦權交給索契的時候，就跌破大家的眼鏡，因為冬奧通常都是辦在比較寒冷的國家，不過，索契這個地方is better known for palm trees than for ski slopes，這句話的意思就是，這個城市的棕櫚樹比它的滑雪道還要出名，也就是意指，他的天氣溫度其實是比較溫暖的，相對來說，是不適合舉辦冬奧的。

Finn: Yes and a lot of technology has been used to make this year's sportsmen and sportswomen faster than ever – and that's what we'll be discussing today, as well as explaining some sports-related vocabulary.
不過這次的冬奧引進了許多的最新科技，讓許多參賽者，不管是男是女，競賽的速度都增快許多。

Sportsmen就是男性運動家，Sportswomen就是女性運動家的意思。

今天主要是要跟大家介紹sports-related的字彙。 “什麼東西相關的” 就可以套用在 xxx-related裡面，比方說我們今天要介紹冬奧相關的事情，你也可以說 Winter Olympics-related。

Rob: But first Finn, let's see if you can 'go for gold' and get this question right. One winter sport event in this Olympics is the Biathlon. It involves competitors doing two things but what are they? Are they:

“Go for gold”的意思有點像是，一舉成名，用在這個對話裡，意思是指，Finn是否能夠很厲害的一舉答對這個問題。這次的冬奧有一項運動是要參賽者同時做兩項運動，猜猜看是哪一個吧!

a) Cross-country skiing and rifle shooting 越野滑雪和射擊
b) Downhill skiing and rifle shooting 高山滑雪和射擊
c) Cross-country skiing and swimming 越野滑雪和游泳

當你要問別人是不是很喜歡做某件事情的時候，你可以用 “Are you a fan of xxx?” Rob就問Finn，Are you a fan of Winter Olympics? 你喜歡看冬奧嗎? 這樣的問法會比Do you like Winter Olympics? 感覺還要強烈一點。

Finn: Yes, they need to be very fit but technology can also give them a helping hand. Behind the scenes, computer modelling helps to design the best wind-resistant bobsleighs - and the best techniques for the athletes to use.

其中一項運動 Bobsleigh 雪車競速是Finn比較喜歡的一項運動，這次索契引進一項新科技，讓雪車設計成可以降低wind-resistance，也就是風阻力，讓雪車的速度可以發揮到最大值，這是透過computer modelling，也就是電腦設計出來的。普遍的運動家統稱，我們會稱呼他們為Athletes。這些最新科技可以幫助這些Athletes增強他們的競爭力，在這裏我們用一個片語，give them a helping hand，有點像是伸出援手，或是助你一臂之力。

另外一項運動 speed skating 競速滑冰中，選手們穿的衣服質料和設計也會影響到他們最後的成績，好的選手服，甚至會讓他們 beat their personal best，也就是讓他們超越自己最好的成績。當你用beat這個動詞的時候，你可以用來形容 “超越” 或是 “贏過” 別人，通常我們會說 you beat me，意思不是你打我或是你揍我，意思是你 “打敗” 了我。

選手所用的器具也會影響到他們的表現，好的話，甚至會讓他們有明顯的優勢，the design of sportswear can give competitors an advantage ，讓人擁有優勢的英文可以用give someone an advantage，另外take advantage of someone的意思，則大大不同，意思是佔別人便宜。而好的器具會有更好的durability，也就是穩定性和耐用度的意思，staying in good condition for a long time despite constant use

Finn: Yes, and there are different designs for different types of skiing: some skis are narrow and light to use for cross-country skiing while others are short with curved edges, to allow skiers to tackle sharp turns in a slalom race.

滑雪競賽又有分很多種，所以，需要使用的器具又有所不同。有些滑雪板比較窄又比較輕 (narrow and light)，這種通常是用在越野滑雪中，另外一種比較短而在尾端又有弧度的則是用在slalom race (高山滑雪)，這樣的設計主要是幫助選手可以在高速的狀況下，可以tackle sharp turns，tackle是成功地做到某件事情，sharp turns是指俐落的轉彎。

Rob: A slalom involves lots of tight turns. I tried that when I went skiing once and it was quite tricky, especially at speed, which is why I took my time, doing a snow-plough around every pole.

高山滑雪有很多的tight turns。這是有他一定的難度在。在這裏我們可以學Rob使用tricky來形容一件事情不容易或是有點挑戰。Take my time的意思是，多花一點時間慢慢來的意思。

Snow-plough意思是在每一個轉彎點，用比較慢的速度，做360度的轉圈來緩衝下山的速度。

Rob: There are other types of skiing in the Winter Olympics such as, ski jumping, freestyle skiing, skiing moguls and Nordic skiing. All these need one crucial – or essential thing: 其他還有ski jumping (跳台滑雪)、free style skiing (自由式滑雪) 等都需要一個很重要的東西，就是大自然的力量，”雪”。雪的軟硬程度也會影響到選手們的表現，剛下完雪的時候，雪比較軟，滑起來會比較順，阻力也比較好控制。雪下完一陣子之後會慢慢變成冰，也會比較硬，滑起來會更滑，阻力比較難控制。索契因為屬於subtropical亞熱帶地區，所以大部分的場地都是用artificial or face snow (人工雪) 造成的。
