有些名詞加了s，意思就完全不同。

Annie第一次被指派出差，興奮又緊張，她聽說美國海關非常嚴格，深怕自己一個不小心說錯回答，臨行前和外籍同事提起，她說："I'm not familiar with the American custom."她其實要講「我不熟悉美國海關」，聽在老外耳裡，就變成了「我不熟悉美國風俗。」當然，和同事進行了一場牛頭不對馬嘴的對話。

在英文中，許多名詞加了s之後，意思會延伸，或變得完全不一樣。"custom"一詞有習俗、慣例之意，複數型是"customs"，但customs的另一個意思是指「海關」，經常用大寫表示某一個特定的海關：

你通關有麻煩嗎？

（X） Did you have any trouble with the custom?

（O） Did you have any trouble with the Customs?

Custom可以當「風俗、習慣」，可數的複數型式是customs：

（O）The custom has now become a rule.（那種習慣現已變為成規。）

（O） Greeting customs vary widely around the world.（打招呼的習慣每個國家很不一樣。）

空氣Air也有複數？

s就變成另外一個字，air也是個例子：

我們需要一些新鮮空氣

（X） We need some fresh airs.

（O） We need some fresh air.

Don't give yourself airs.

（X） 別吸太多氣。

（O） 別擺架子。

再看一個字，headquarters：這個字意思是總部，字尾本來就有s，它的動詞才是"headquarter"。

（X） Our headquarter is located in California.

（O） Our headquarters are located in California. （我們的總部位於加州）

（O） Our company is headquartered in California. （我們公司的總部位於加州）

為什麼headquarter 要加s？

單就quarter來看，它主要有三個含義：第一個是「四分之一」，亦延伸為「四等份」、「十五分鐘」（六十分鐘的四分之一）、「25分硬幣」（一塊錢的四分之一）、「季」（十二個月的四分之一） 、「一局體育賽事」 （四局賽事的四分之一）、「上下弦月」（月亮的四分之一）等之意；第二個，則是與法文字"quartier"一樣，代表「區」、「地區」：

（O） The pizza is cut into quarters. （比薩被切成了四等份）

（O） The quarterly report must be filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission
at the end of each quarter. （季度報告必須於每一季末提交予美國證券交易委員會）

（O） The home side took the lead in the second quarter. （主隊在第二局領先）

（O） He lives in the student quarter. （他住在學生居住區）

不過，當quarter後面加s之後，它的意思延伸為建築物或住所，尤指提供給軍人與其家庭的住所．因此，head與quarters的結合，不但指營運、管理中心，亦指軍、警的司令部或司令部全體人員。

那麼，既然headquarters不是代表兩個以上的總部，下列何者才是正確的呢?

A：Our headquarters is located in California.

B：Our headquarters are located in California. （我們的總部位於加州）

答案是都對。若你只是想單純表達總部位於加州，A是正確答案．但若你提到總部二字時，腦中出現了由大小建築物集結在一起的畫面，B也是正確的。
