也可以說 a hopeless situation，更正式的說法有 dire straits 或 desperate straits。strait 另一個意思是「海峽」，當「困境、窘境」時，需用複數。

例句：
Losing his job and his wife put Stanley in a desperate situation.
沒了工作也沒了老婆讓史丹利陷入絕境。

Many only pray to God when faced with a hopeless situation.
許多人面臨絕境時才會向主禱告。
