Please knock on the door before entering."

藉機來說說敲門"Knock"這個有意思的動詞,它的意思是「敲」,但敲門為什麼不是knock the door而是knock on the door(也可以用knock at the door)?

I knocked the nail into the wall.(我把釘子釘到牆上)

Somebody was knocking on the window.(剛才有人在敲窗)

Knock on the door

(X)I'd like to introduce you my boss.

(O)I'd like to introduce my boss to you.

(X)Say you hello.

(O)Say hello to you.

(X)Explain me this rule.

(O)Explain this rule to me.

(X)Don't use up all the soap.Leave me some to wash.

(O)Don't use up all the soap. Leave me some to wash with.
