For an entertaining, heartwarming flick, watch this amicable garden snail escargot, escargoing and escargone. This one shell of an idea combines the two most unlikely elements together — race cars and snails — into a feel-good family-friendly film.
From the makers of “Madagascar” and “Kung Fu Panda,” “Turbo” is a speedy movie about a garden snail, Theo (voiced by Ryan Renolds), who is obsessed with speed. This adorable little sucker dreams big and wishes he could be fast, and low and behold, his wish is granted after a series of accidents which ends in throwing Theo into a tank of nitrous oxide, freeing him from his snail's pace.
Now with his newly acquired speed, Theo calls himself “Turbo.” With the help of taco stand man Tito (voiced by Michael Peña), Turbo enters the car-race of the year: The Indianapolis 500. However, Turbo's pessimistic, disapproving brother, Chet (voiced by Paul Giamatti), is less than excited that his little brother might not survive the race and be crushed to a pulp under the hot rubber tires of the racecars.
The humor has its own personality from the contributions of various voice actors, bringing life to a bunch of extremely cool snails, such as Samuel L. Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz and Michael Patrick Bell. With clever references, sarcastic comebacks, humorous language, reoccurring jokes and randomness, adults can also have a good laugh.
“Turbo” snails the spot as one of the best films to take children to see, as its positive messages of “dream big” and “never give up” are definitely encouraging for younger audiences. Although its storyline is rather predictable, the races are exciting to watch and you simply can't help but root for the underdog. But this is not something we've not seen before. Strongly reminding us of the not-so-long-ago “Ratatouille” success, if a gutter rat can be a Michelin chef at a French restaurant, why can't a garden snail be a speed racer?
Other shadows of similarities include the gangster-looking bug-crushing kid who takes much pleasure in crushing bugs under his tricycle; the random crows which snag up snails on a daily basis; and the crazy little old lady Kim Ly; seen in “Toy Story,” “Finding Nemo” and “Madagascar.”
Even though “Turbo” may not be as impressive as its animation rivals this year, such as “Despicable Me 2” and “Monster's University,” it certainly still packs plenty of laughs, good entertainment and a guaranteed quality time with your family.
