It is already terribly embarrassing to visit an automatic teller machine (ATM) and find yourself not having enough money left in your account. What is even more embarrassing, however, is to hear the ATM’s voice alert announcing just that at seventy-eight decibels, the noise level of a high-speed-rail train passing by, making people wish they could vanish from the humiliation.
According to a report by United Daily News, a visit to Taitung’s eleven financial institutions shows that only the post office and the Land Bank of Taiwan will alert people that their bank accounts are nearly empty by giving a verbal announcement at seventy-eight decibels, equivalent to an announcement at a railway station and indoor smoke alarms.
The Bank of Taiwan, Taiwan Business Bank, the Tenth Credit Cooperative of Hualien and some others will return the card to the cardholder and automatically print out a receipt if there is not enough money in the account. E.Sun Commercial Bank, Taiwan Cooperative Financial Holding Co and the Agriculture Service Group will display an alert message on the screen without giving a verbal announcement. Chunghwa Post Co.’s Taitung branch said they have recently received much feedback from the public and will advise the main branch to carry out a comprehensive review and improvement.
