Allen的公司開股東會，他擔任英語主持人，回應外資法人代表的問題，並要求大家「give a big clap」。會後，一位外籍代表趨前「認真」的對Allen說："You should not give anyone the clap. Go and see your doctor."原來是Allen用錯字鬧笑話了。以下試舉常見錯誤句：

（X） Please give this gentleman a big clap.

（O） Please give this gentleman a big hand.

說明：clap當動詞時確實是「拍手」，但當名詞時常被拿來指「淋病」，所以「為某人鼓掌」應該用give someone a hand才不會遭白眼。

例：That was a wonderful speech. Everyone stood up and gave the speaker a big hand.（那是場很棒的演說，每個人都站起來為演講人鼓掌。）

（X） Thank you for your speech.

（O） Thank you for your comment.

說明：speech是指篇幅較長的「演講」，如果某人只是表達意見或建議，用speech這個字是暗指對方發言太過冗長，有諷刺的味道。

例：Thank you for your comment.We’ll give careful consideration to this question.（謝謝您的發言，我們會審慎考慮這個問題。）

抱歉，我聽不清楚您的問題。
（X） Excuse me. I can’t listen to your question.

（O） Excuse me. I can’t hear your question.

說明：listen to是「傾聽」，hear才是「聽到」。I can’t listen to your question是「我無法傾聽你說的問題」，也就是在表示「這是什麼問題，我聽不下去了」。

例：Excuse me. I can’t hear your question. Could you speak up a little？（抱歉，我聽不清楚您的問題，可以再大聲一點嗎？）
