摩天輪是由喬治費瑞斯（George Ferris）發明的，因此Ferris的字首一般都大寫。1893年，由費瑞斯設計並建造的摩天輪在芝加哥世界博覽會（World’s Columbian Exposition）展出，以後的摩天輪都是以此作為原型。
