用「off」讓結局更圓滿
當我們聽到英文字詞中有 off 這個字，很容易覺得負面，例如「關閉、離開……」。
其實 off 不一定是負面，它和很多動詞形成片語時，會有「完成」的概念。「off」像畫完了一個圈圈，意謂著結束後的結局就是「圓滿」。
1. top off 加滿，補滿 (= fill)
I guess we have enough gas to get there, but it’s better we top it off so we won’t stop again tomorrow.
我想我們的汽油還夠到達那裡，但我們最好還是把油加滿，以免明天又困在半路上。
top off 有添加、補滿，讓事情更令人滿意的意思。但有時候也會根據說話的情境而得到反諷的效果，例如：
I had a really bad day, and to top it off, I have to attend a lengthy meeting tonight.
我今天糟透了，更棒的是，我晚上還要去參加一個很冗長的會議。
2. round off 圓滿達成
We round the presentation off with a catchy brand story video.
我們用一個很吸睛的品牌故事影片讓報告畫下一個完美的句點。
借用這個「圓滿」的意義，round off 用在數字的世界就是「四捨五入」：
To make the report neat, we rounded off 8.789 to 9.
我們把 8.789 四捨五入成 9，報告看起來才會簡潔。
3. sign off 簽字認可
The CEO has to sign off on any expenses over $2,500.
超過 2,500 美金的開銷都要由執行長簽字允許。
sign off 不是一般的簽字，而是特指在正式文件上必須經過某人的「簽字、許可」。
4. pay off 成功、奏效
My investment in those stocks has really paid off.
我投資的那些股票已經賺了。
pay off 當不可分的動詞片語時，是積極的「成功、奏效」的意思；當可分動詞片語 pay sth. off，是比較消極的「付清、償清」之意：
Did you pay off the rent yet?
你已經付了房租了嗎？
5. pass off 順利完成
The meeting passed off very well.
會議進行得很順利。
pass off 通常指以某種特定的方式完成，後方常會有副詞附帶提出它的完成方式：
He passed off the accusation with a laugh
他對指責一笑了之。
如果是可分動詞片語 pass sth. off 就成了較負面的意思「假裝、佯裝」：
Don’t try to pass those fakes off on your customers, or you’ll ruin your reputation.
不要用那些仿冒品騙你的客戶，否則你會毀了自己的名聲。
