FINDING THE PERFECT STORY
Scanlon and his Pixar colleagues had been discussing making a new "Monsters" film for years. Billy Crystal, who is the English voice of Mike, recalls attending fellow voice actor John Goodman's surprise 50th birthday party, where he bumped into Lasseter. "John (Lasseter) said they were bouncing around a few ideas for a new film, but they just had to find the right story," Crystal said. That was in 2002. "Pixar doesn't use a story until it's written and rewritten until it's perfect," Crystal said.
In the case of "Monsters University," that story meant taking Mike and Sulley back to their college days. "We wanted to capture those first days in college when you arrive and you're confident, and then you realize there's a lot of competition on campus," Scanlon said. "We wanted a story everyone could relate to, not just kids."
"If there's a message in the film, I think it's that sometimes you have to discover who you really are, instead of what you're expected to be," Scanlon noted. "It might be a slightly heavier theme than the first movie, but I think kids are more aware than we think."
Of course, if it's a Pixar movie, it needs to look pretty, too. Rae estimates that while the first film featured fewer than 50 monsters, the new movie has more than 300. "What we can do now with technology is incredible, but you still have to make it consistent with the world people remember from the first film," she said.
For the actors, it meant changing the voice-acting style they used in the original film. "I wanted to pitch my voice a little higher, give it just a little more energy," said Goodman, who provides the voice for Sulley. "You're trying to recall that youthful energy you had in school."
Wang Wei-zhong, who is the Mandarin voice of Sulley, said the theme of the movie is especially clear to him, as his daughter dubbed the little girl Boo in the first film 12 years ago. Time flies, he explained, as his little girl is now a college student, just like the characters in this new movie.
Mickey Huang, who provided the Mandarin voice for Mike in both "Monsters, Inc." and "Monsters University," explained that he was just happy to return to this character after such a long time away. And although the setting has changed, Huang noted that Pixar's unique style of humor is certainly present in this hilarious and heartwarming tale.
