這三個名詞均意為「故事」，但它們的含意和用法不盡相同，在使用上不能混為一談！例如，在 The May-December romance was the cover story in that tabloid magazine. (這一老少配戀情是那份八卦雜誌的封面故事) 這句中，story 不能用 narrative 或 tale 來替換，因為 cover story (封面故事) 是固定搭配或用法。
