商業人士開會，經常要「確認」會議時間；出差要「確認」行程，我們的學生也經常打電話來要「確認」今天有沒有課。

訂房、訂位、會議安排，生活裡要確認的項目多得不得了，有位讀者寫信來問，"Confirm"和"make sure"都是「確認」，哪個情況要用哪個字才對？

先來看定義上的不同。Confirm要確認「一件事的正確性」，make sure要確認的是「一個動作會發生」。

我們會檢查流程，確保事情順利進行。
（X）We'll check the agenda to confirm that everything runs smoothly.
（O）We'll check the agenda to make sure that everything runs smoothly.

要確認的是"everything runs smoothly"這個動作會發生，用make sure。

主管想確認Janice下週是否不在辦公室。
（X）The director wants to make sure if Janice will be out of the office next week.
（O）The director wants to confirm if Janice will be out of the office next week.

主管要確認的是「Janice不在辦公室」這個消息是真的，而不是要確保她不會在辦公室，用confirm。

再來是文法上的差異，make sure既然是確保一件事會發生，它後面接的是一個子句，而confirm的彈性就大一點，可以接子句，也可以接名詞。

（O）confirm a schedule/reservation

接下來考考自己是不是真懂了：

你今天一定要跟他們確認會面細節。
（X）Please confirm to make sure the appointment with them today.
（O）Please make sure that you confirm the appointment with them today.

一定要和他們確認，做這件事來確保事情順利，用make sure，確認會面的資訊是否正確，用confirm。

回到一開始的問題，「我想確認訂房」這句話英文怎麼說？
I'd like to confirm my reservation at the hotel.
I'd like to make sure (that) you have my reservation.

這兩種說法都可以，用make sure語氣略微隨意一些
