網路和手機訊息裡常用的「表情符號」，在英文裡叫emoticon [ɪˋmotɪkɑn]
它是由emotion [ɪˋmoʃən](情感)和icon [ˋaɪkɑn](圖像符號)所組合成的新字
是可數名詞
不過日本有家公司推出一套符號軟體叫emoji [ɪˋmodʒi] 由於很受歡迎
漸漸也有人用它來指emoticon
但emoticon還是最常見的說法
另外像常用的笑臉符號則也有它自己的說法，叫smiley [ˋsmaɪli]
俏皮的眨眼符號則叫winky [ˋwɪŋki]
我們來造些句：
Some people love using emoticons in their text messages. 
(有些人很喜歡在簡訊裡使用表情符號。)
There is a smiley at the end of his message. 
(他在簡訊最後放了一個笑臉符號。)
My mom has just started using emoticons, but she doesn’t find them very useful because it always takes her a while to find the right one. 
(我媽最近剛開始使用表情符號，可是因為她都要花一點時間才能找到想要用的符號，所以她並不覺得它們很好用。)
Emoticons sometimes come in handy since words aren’t always able to convey the right emotions. 
(文字並非總是能夠傳達正確的情緒，因此表情符號有時很方便。)
