Nearly 4,000 venues can provide English services: RDEC

Taipei, Oct. 17 (CNA) A total of 3,911 locations around the country have been awarded an "English Services Emblem" -- an identification indicating that the establishments can provide services in English, Research, Development and Evaluation Commission (RDEC) Minister Chu Ching-peng said Monday.

Chu made the observation at a ceremony held with Vice Minister of Economic Affairs Francis Liang to award the 1,332 establishments that were selected to receive the emblem this year.

The RDEC launched the "English Services Emblem" program in 2007 as part of efforts to improve and promote Taiwan's English-language services in the areas of shopping, accommodation, food and beverages, tourism, medical assistance and transport.

Chu also noted the growing capability of venues on the outlying islands of Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu in providing services in English, saying that 121 establishments in the region were awarded the emblem this year compared with only one last year.

All the awarded venues are identified on a map provided on the RDEC's official website.
