Bill Condon, the director of "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Parts 1 and 2," knew that bringing Stephenie Meyer's young-adult novel "Breaking Dawn" to the big screen meant wading through some seriously intense themes not traditionally seen in a film designed for young teens.
As he worked his way through the book to prepare for shooting "Breaking Dawn – Parts 1 and 2," he was struck by the sheer number of plot points he referred to as "delicate issues." "I was reading it going, 'Wow, so much happens in this story,'" said Condon. "It certainly doesn't play it safe. It was daunting."
Thankfully, Condon found words of inspiration for his first foray into the world of teen fiction. "There was one very consistent idea that kept coming through," he said. "Don't water it down. There's something crazy and intense about this book, and you just have to embrace it and put it into the two movies."
Condon hopes the legions of "Twi-hard" fans also embrace the closing of the wildly successful film series. "This was the longest book," Condon said. "I don't feel like I made two movies; I feel like I made a really long final chapter. It would have been unfair to cram it all into one movie."
As the man in charge of ending the beloved "Twilight" series, Condon felt the pressure, but he insists it simply inspired him to do a great job. "There certainly have been a lot of eyes on me right from the beginning since people care about this so much," he said. "It's great. I have enjoyed it. But there is a sense that you don't want to screw it up for all the people who love it so much."
The director was impressed with his young actors' maturity in handling the intense emotional aspects of the end of the series. Talking to fan website Twilightlexicon.com, Condon noted that this film had a different focus from the previous installments, which all dealt with Bella and Edward's relationship. "It was interesting because the love triangle is over. So it doesn't have that, but the thing that has replaced it is their love for Renesmee. She becomes the focus of all the strongest emotional moments in the movie."
Star Robert Pattinson said Condon was fully aware of the responsibility on his shoulders and of the fact that he was walking into a series that is so important to the actors. "Bill was sensitive to the fact that the entire cast has basically grown up together," Pattinson noted. "He wanted to get on the same page as everyone."
Condon also developed a tight working relationship with screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who has written all the Twilight screenplays. She was quick to praise Condon and called working with him "the best collaboration of my career." "This movie really had the big scenes," Rosenberg said. "We, and especially Bill, had to get those right or face pain of death from the fans." Condon, however, need not worry. Once fans see "Breaking Dawn – Part 2," Condon will be receiving praise rather than pain.
