The world's most famous superhero makes his long-awaited return to the big screen
MOVIE SYNOPSIS
A boy is born on the dying planet of Krypton. The baby's
desperate parents send him to safety on the planet Earth, where the boy grows up in rural America as Clark Kent. As he grows up, he discovers that he has incredible powers, such as super-strength and the ability to fly. Keeping his abilities a secret is not easy, however, and Clark becomes a loner.
Everything changes when Earth is invaded by alien forces led by General Zod (played by Michael Shannon), who is also from Krypton. The alien attack forces a now adult Clark Kent (played by Henry Cavill) to come to terms with his powers and become Superman in order to save the world.
The Man in the Suit
"My version of Superman is essentially a guy who has spent his whole life alone," explained British actor Henry Cavill, the man chosen to play perhaps the world's most famous superhero in "Man of Steel" — the reboot of the Superman franchise that will be released in Taiwan on June 12.
Feeling alone is something that Cavill understands. When he was growing up in Britain, one of his favorite things to eat was fish and chips. Though a delicious treat, the deep-fried meal is notoriously unhealthy, and Cavill was far from a thin child. "I was fat," he said, recalling that other children would tease him about his weight, and even had a nickname for him: Fat Cavill. Though painful, these experiences helped him understand the role of Clark Kent in the new film.
In many ways, the difficult part of playing Superman was getting his body into top physical condition. For starters, he had to go to the gym for over two hours every day. And in order to get enough energy for his workouts and to become big enough to play the famously buff Superman, Cavill ate nearly 5,000 calories a day — around double that of a normal man his age.
There can be no doubt, however, that his efforts paid off. The film's director, Zack Snyder, said that when Cavill gets into the Superman suit, "instead of looking like he is dressing up like Superman, it is like: 'That's Superman.'"
In fact, maybe fate always intended for him to take on the role of Superman. "I was actually up for Superman before," Cavill explained, referring to a planned Superman film in the early 2000s. Cavill, then only 19 years old, was cast in the role and was ready to shoot the movie when a new director came in and replaced him with another actor.
Now, the 30-year-old actor finally has the chance to prove that he was born to play the iconic part. "This character matters so much to so many people," Cavill told Details magazine. "I want to do it justice. I want people to believe in the character and have faith in the character. I want kids to grow up wanting to be Superman."
