The Filmmakers behind 'Man of Steel'

Before "Man of Steel," five feature films were made about the iconic character of Superman, and in each of these movies the character was generally depicted in the same way: as a flawless hero eager to rush to innocent people's rescue in his brightly colored outfit.

But this is a new world for superhero films. The recent trilogy of Batman films, directed by Christopher Nolan, showed people another kind of superhero movie. Rather than making the films look and feel like comic books, the "Dark Knight" series explored Batman's character in a more serious way. Everything in the movies, from the colors to the storylines, was darker and more realistic.

This approach proved to be incredibly successful. For this reason, it's no surprise that "Man of Steel" is taking a similar approach, especially as Nolan worked on the film as its producer.

Asked whether the new Superman would be similar in style to the recent Batman films, Nolan replied, "Well, somewhat. But I wouldn't want people to think we're doing for Superman what we did for Batman. Superman is a completely different character than Batman. So you can't in any way use the same template."

The director of "Man of Steel," Zack Snyder, is also quick to point out that they haven't simply tried to copy what Nolan did with Batman. But he noted that it was important to make Superman more vulnerable, more complex and more human.

"Everyone is used to seeing Superman in a certain way," Snyder said. "Maybe in your mind you say, 'I know exactly what Superman is.' With this movie, we were able to say, 'What about this way of looking at him?' We tried to make him more modern … It's a more serious version of Superman."

Snyder is best known for directing warrior epic "300" and superhero movie "Watchmen." The heavy use of computer graphics in those films, making them look almost like comic books, is very different to the gritty feel of Nolan's Batman movies.

However, Snyder said he changed his filmmaking style when bringing Superman to the big screen. "It's the most realistic movie I've made," Snyder explained. He said the film's creators also tried to avoid the slapstick humor that was in previous Superman movies. "I'm saying, 'Superman is a thing that must be taken seriously and embraced and understood.'"

In the end, it seems that "Man of Steel" will fall somewhere in between Nolan's realistic style and Snyder's comic-book creations. And for Snyder, only one thing is certain: "You're going to see a Superman you've never seen before."
