A female panda named Yuan Yuan given to Taiwan in late 2008 by mainland China together with a male panda, named Tuan Tuan, delivered a baby panda last night at Taipei Zoo, with Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin instructing the zoo to take good care of them, according to the Taipei City Government.
Chang Chi-chiang, spokesman of the city government, said that Mayor Hau, now in Russia attending the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan City, felt very happy to learn of the exciting news that Yuan Yuan gave birth to a baby panda at 8:05 p.m. yesterday.
Hau has instructed Taipei Zoo staffers to take good care of Yuan Yuan and her baby and he believed that the smooth birth indicates Taipei Zoo's mature medical technology, according to Chang.
Hau also noted that the city government will relay the exciting news to the Yaan Giant Panda Base in Sichuan province, the hometown of Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan. The pair arrived in Taipei on Dec. 23, 2008.
