TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The 24th Golden Melody Awards were held last night with Hong Kong singer Sandy Lam (林憶蓮) enjoying arguably the most successful evening, bagging four awards.
Lam's album “Gaia” nabbed the Best Mandarin Album award, and her performance on the record helped her to walk away with the Best Mandarin Female Singer trophy. She could not however attend the event. Her album producer, Chang Shi-lei (常石磊), accepted the awards in her stead. “Lam told me that this was by far the most enjoyable album she ever did,” Chang said. The album also won the Best Album Producer award and the Best Musical Arranger.
“It is a great honor to know the goddess of my heart Sandy Lam. I love you, Sandy,” Chang said.
Jam Hsiao (蕭敬騰) took home the Best Mandarin Male Singer award, beating Jay Chou, Khalil Fong and Yoga Lin.
The award was presented by the so-called Double J (Jay Chou and Jolin Tsai). During the acceptance, Chou gave his consolations to Tsai, as Lam's win for best female singer meant Tsai missed out. Tsai returned the favor after the male singer award was revealed.
The 24th annual Golden Melody Awards began yesterday evening at the Taipei Arena, featuring a string of performances from hip-hop to a cappella aboriginal singing and classic oldies.
Marked as the Grammys of Chinese pop, host Matilda Tao (陶晶瑩) led the audience into the night, celebrating a total of 115 musical works from the past year that included a wide range of diverse languages such as Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka and Taiwanese Aboriginal.
A touching moment occurred when the Special Contribution award was presented to Fong Fei-Fei, a.k.a the “Queen of Hats,” who passed away in January 2012. “I learned a lot about hosting shows from Fong when I had the honor of hosting her press conference years ago. I do apologize for my yet-to-improve hosting skills tonight if they are not good enough,” Tao said through her tears.
The Best New Artist award was snatched away by Taiwanese-American rapper and songwriter Miss Ko (葛仲珊) for her album “Knock Out,” beating the favored “The Catcher in the Rye” from Ann Bai and Jia Jia's “Unforgettable.”
“I'm a little surprised,” Ko said during her speech, rolling out a gush of thank yous to her company, producer and fans. ”Hip-hop can finally be called pop music,” said the rapper, who was reminded several times by the Golden Melody crew that her time was up. Interestingly, the reminder this year sounded similar to the MRT beeping alert that reminds passengers that doors are closing. “I know, I know, I'm almost done,” said Ko, after the beep rang a third time.
Japanese singer-songwriter-actor Masaharu Fukuyama also arrived at the musical event to present the music video award. He especially thanked Taiwanese fans for their donations they gave to Japan during their crisis, speaking in Mandarin “Thank you everyone.”?
