Marvel's latest blockbuster aims to capture a classic spy movie feel
Super-soldier Steve Rogers fought the good fight during World War II in the hit movie "Captain America: The First Avenger," but in this modern-day sequel the superhero is getting a full taste of 21st century politics.
"Captain America: The Winter Soldier," which will be released in Taiwan on March 27, catches up with Rogers (played by Chris Evans) after he has saved New York City in "The Avengers" and throws the Marvel Comics hero into a world of spy intrigue with old friends Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson) and Black Widow (played by Scarlett Johansson).
After spending almost 70 years frozen in ice, the film follows Captain America as he struggles to get used to modern times. That is far from the only problem he faces, however, as he tries to come to terms with the fact that the spy organization he works for, called S.H.I.E.L.D., is proactive when it comes to threats. "This isn't freedom, this is fear," he tells Fury while looking at some of the high-tech weapons that the organization is using. But when a coworker is attacked, he becomes mixed up in a battle that will shape the future of the world.
Directors Anthony and Joe Russo said they were aiming for a classic spy movie feel with this sequel, but they also haven't cut back on the big action sequences that fans of the recent Marvel movies have come to expect. In this eagerly awaited blockbuster, Cap fights in the tight confines of an elevator full of bad guys, for example, and a massive S.H.I.E.L.D. ship crashes spectacularly. "There's nobody better at this kind of action than Marvel," Joe Russo said. "We all tried to up the ante with what happens in this movie, and I think we've done that."
Sebastian Stan, who played Bucky Barnes in the first movie, has a key role in the sequel as the Winter Soldier — a shadowy enemy with a metal arm and strength equal to that of Captain America's. "He's an amazing character. He's so well conceived," said Anthony Russo of the Winter Soldier, who first appeared in the Captain America comic book in the 2000s. "It's one of the best comic book runs of the last 20 years, one of our favorite comic runs of all time, and we really wanted to do it justice. It was important to us to make sure that the Winter Soldier character just jumped off the comic book page and onto the big screen."
