The new movie focuses mainly on young Xavier, Magneto and Mystique, according to Jackman. Yet Wolverine plays a key role, too, as he's tasked by older Xavier and Magneto to go back in time to warn their younger selves about the devastating future. "He's less reluctant to help out and join in, but the stakes are definitely much higher in this movie than ever before," Jackman said.

"Wolverine still occupies that same role as devil's advocate. He gets roped into having to do this mission when he's probably not the right person. But he is the only one physically able to do it," Jackman explained.

Despite playing the iconic character on screen for 14 years, Jackman relished returning to the role. "Of all the bouncing around I do in my career, the Wolverine role is the easiest to get back into. People might assume that I'm getting tired of it, but I'm not — it's getting more engaging. I'm having more fun with the character than ever before," Jackman said. "I feel blessed to have this part. I never thought in a million years I'd get to play him seven times. I get to walk on set with the claws and the hair, and I thank my lucky stars. I don't take anything for granted."
