台灣各地近年來其單車人數越來越多，總統馬英九週日在出席青年政策論壇時，宣布明年底將會完成貫穿全台的單車國道。未來完成後，民眾只需九天就可以完成鐵馬環台。
目前台灣自行車道約四千零一十七公里，卻都是零碎未連接的，政府預估將投入新台幣十二億元，將這些分布在各縣市的單車道串聯起來，預計總共串連六十個段點，希望能在二０一五年完成一條貫穿全台的自行車道。
另外，考量騎士的安全以及方便性，這條單車道將會以連接省道為主，不過，在蘇花公路和南迴鐵路上可能考慮使用火車連接。未來民眾若想要騎單車環台，走此條單車國道的話，預計九天就可以繞完台灣一圈了。
