「轉虧為盈」可以說 out of the red，red 指「赤字」，從赤字中走出來，就是轉虧為盈，因此，如果有公司等的經濟狀況 in the red，表示它還「處於虧損、負債中」。

相反地，如果要表達「有賺錢、有盈餘」，就可以使用片語 in the black。表達「轉虧為盈」還可以使用 turn a loss into a profit。
