On July 28, the Taipei City Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs launched its citywide guided tour project “Taking you on Taipei tours 2014” at the plaza in front of the old Nishi Hongan temple in Wanhua District. Project events, which started on Aug. 1 and end on Nov. 9, include 200 free guided tours that offer in-depth introductions to various scenic spots around the city pertaining to nature, the humanities, history and art.

The guided tour project’s activities are split into four broad categories, including Taipei’s historic sites, old trees, local cultural buildings and public artworks. The project received rave reviews during its first year last year. Since this year is the 130th anniversary of the founding of Taipei, the department is working in collaboration with other local government agencies to expand the scope of the project.

Cultural Affairs Commissioner Liu Wei-gong says that the project is meant to be a simple and enriching way to get better acquainted with the city. The project includes all 12 of Taipei’s administrative districts and 21 unique tour routes, 10 themed routes with 85 destinations, as well as various activities for Father’s Day in August, historic sites in September and handprint parties to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the founding of Taipei in October.

Professional tour guides provide unique tour routes in Taipei’s administrative districts, allowing people to see distinct scenic spots in each district, including bookstores specializing in the humanities in Zhongzheng and Daan districts and ancient temples in Datong District. You can also take a stroll along the historic routes surrounding the old east, west, south, Chonghsi and north gates from the Qing Dynasty, or take a leisurely boat ride on the Tamsui River. The tour activities are sure to provide a comprehensive travel experience for everyone.

Registration for the tours is divided into three stages. Registration for August activities is already underway, while registration for September’s guided tour activities begins on Aug. 24 and registration the October and November tours starts on Sept. 24. The details for registering and all of the activities are available at www.icgtp.com or by telephone at 02-2556-0986.
