古人云'early bird catches the worm'(早起的鳥兒有蟲吃)，公雞在破曉前會'cock-a-doodle-doo'(咕咕咕)。也許清晨起床或黃昏睡著，到底是幾點？到底是早上8點還是8點？你會說'8:15'(8點15分)還是'15 minutes after 8'(8點後15分)呢？
當你看到時間'a.m.'表示午前的時間，時間'p.m.'表示午後的時間。
'O'clock'表示明確幾點鐘，因此'eight-oh-one'表示8點1分(8:01)，就不能用'o’clock'！所以只能使用表示為1, 2, 3…,11及12以前的點鐘！你不會看到13:00說成13點鐘的，但是可以看成1點鐘或'1pm'(下午1點鐘)
我們會說'minutes past an hour'(1小時過去幾分鐘)只會用在30 minutes past an hour(1點30分)。在6:31，我們必須就往前看，因為離下一個小時距離較近，所以說成'twenty nine minutes to seven'(29分鐘到7點)！通常只有用'half past’而不用‘half to'。
'Quarter past'(過四等份之一)與'quarter to'(四等份之一到)各表示15分與45分。通常使用介係詞'at'表時間：'Stop by at 8'(8點鐘來到那裡)或'The show starts at nine forty five' (或 quarter to ten或9:45)(表演於9點45分開始)。
一般常見片語像是'in the morning'(在早上)、'in the evening'(在晚上)、'past the hour'(過去1小時) and 'minutes to the hour'(分鐘到1小時): 'It’s eight in the morning'(早上8點)、'The guests will arrive at 6 in the evening' (6pm or 18:00)(客人將於晚上6點抵達)、'It's ten past five (17:10). We need to get ready(現在是5點10分，我們要準備了)'、'Its 5 minutes to 6! The guest will be here soon! (17:55)'(現在是5點55分，客人快要來了！)、'It’s six fifteen (or quarter past six or 18:15). The guests are arriving'(現在是6點15分，客人將抵達)。
18:15 可以說成'six fifteen'或'quarter past six'
18:45可以說成'quarter to seven'或'six forty five'，但不可說成'forty five minutes past six'！
08:00表示'eight o'clock'、’eight A. M.'或'eight in the morning'
12:00是'midday'(正午)、'noon’、’twelve P M'或'twelve o'clock'
00:00是'midnight'(午夜)
