Replacing Jason Bourne

Rising star Jeremy Renner is ready for a new mission

You'd think that suppressing a smile about joining three of the biggest franchises in film history would be impossible. But actor Jeremy Renner, who starred in "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol," "The Avengers" and now the upcoming "The Bourne Legacy," is managing to stay pretty calm.

Then again, Renner has seemed set for superstardom before, especially after his excellent performance as a serial killer in 2002's "Dahmer." Although critics loved him in that film, many movie studio bosses thought he was a little too scary. "I had plenty of bad times. There were times when I couldn't afford the electric bill, but I was still alive — and still smiling. Even in my darkest hour, I was still happy. I never considered giving up. Not once," said Renner.

So after "Dahmer," he returned to doing auditions and landed supporting roles in "S.W.A.T.," "28 Weeks Later" and "The Assassination of Jesse James." He also starred in the short-lived cop series "The Unusuals."

But Renner had an influential fan in director Kathryn Bigelow, who admired his work in "Dahmer" and wanted him for the lead role in an Iraq war film called "The Hurt Locker."

"She had to convince the producers of "The Hurt Locker" that the same guy who played Jeffrey Dahmer could be a war hero," Renner said. "But she thought I was someone who could bring something special to the character. Finding the kindness in a villain or the flaws in a hero is the key to creating great drama."

For his role in "The Hurt Locker," Renner was nominated for an Academy Award, and the movie was named the best picture of 2008. Two years later, he was nominated for best supporting actor at the Oscars for his role as a ruthless bank robber in "The Town."

Now, at the age of 41, the American actor, who once studied to be a cop, is getting starring roles in guaranteed blockbusters. In this summer's all-star comic-book movie "The Avengers," Renner played archer Hawkeye. And in "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol," he was the sidekick to Tom Cruise's superspy main character.

Now, in "The Bourne Legacy," which will be released on Aug. 10 in Taiwan, Renner takes over as the action hero from Matt Damon. "The Bourne Legacy" may carry Jason Bourne's name, but the title character will not appear in this film. The fourth Bourne movie features a new character called Aaron Cross (played by Renner) who went through the same style of military training that Bourne received.

"Yeah, I'm not playing Jason Bourne. It's called 'The Bourne Legacy,' and it's a sort of continuation of the story, but not based on a book like the others," Renner explained. "I loved doing it, though it's very different from 'Mission: Impossible.' It's action-heavy but not stunt-heavy. It's grittier and more physical," said Renner.

There's gossip that each of Renner's three summer blockbuster roles in 2012 could lead to long-term commitments. Renner admits that there have already been discussions about sequels to those movies, but his participation depends on the public's interest — and his own.

"As an actor, you just want to be challenged," he said. Regardless of whether we see Renner return to these roles, he has plenty of other work lined up. His future challenges include a supernatural update of a fairy tale in "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters."

Renner's biggest immediate challenge may be handling the fame that comes from starring in so many blockbuster movies. "It's surreal that a dude from a small town is getting such big roles, but I don't take anything for granted," he said. "Just like in the movie 'Ghost Protocol,' you could have all sorts of experts and money, but then you get hit by a sandstorm and you find yourself lost. It's like the Boy Scouts say — travel light and be prepared for anything." After coming close to superstardom in the past, Renner looks like a man prepared for fame.
