MOVIE SYNOPSIS

Fifteen years after Hansel and Gretel got lost in a forest and were almost eaten by an evil witch, the siblings have grown into vengeful bounty hunters. The brother-and-sister team now use their expert skills to rid the world of witches. One day, the pair is contacted by the mayor of a German town, who wants them to kill an evil sorceress named Muriel. Time is of the essence, however, as this powerful witch is planning to sacrifice many of the town's children in just two days. Will the legendary fairy-tale characters be able to defeat their most dangerous adversary in time to save the children?

Dark tales

Want to see a bedtime story, not just hear one? The kind of tale with a big, bad wolf, a jealous queen or a wicked witch? Hollywood certainly hopes so.

Adventures inspired by fairy tales are the latest trend in movies, but don't expect watered-down family fare. These new live-action films are aiming for a more mature approach with a mix of action, horror and humor.

The last few years have seen the release of "Red Riding Hood," "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "Mirror, Mirror;" however, this year is set to be even more chockablock with fairy-tale action. In March, a darker take on "Jake and the Beanstalk," titled "Jack the Giant Killer," will hit big screens. This is expected to be followed by "Oz the Great and Powerful" — a tale that explains the origins of the wizard in the classic tale "The Wizard of Oz."

Before all this, however, the most famous brother-and-sister duo from the world of fairy tales will light up the big screen in "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters," which is being released in Taiwan on Jan. 23 and stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the famous siblings.

"Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" was directed by young Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola, who wanted to return to the story's dark roots. The director said confidently: "I'm sure horror movie fans will enjoy this film so much that they'll forget about their popcorn." This is a sentiment that lead actor Jeremy Renner agrees with. Speaking to MTV, "The Avengers" star noted: "It's in a wonderful fairy-tale world that's a bit gritty and scary."

The villain of the film, the evil witch Muriel, is played by Famke Janssen. The actress said that one of the major challenges for her was the amount of makeup she had to wear. The director insisted on using real makeup rather than special effects, meaning that Janssen had to sit in a makeup chair for three hours every day. Although this was difficult, the actress said it was more than worth it. "It was so empowering because I looked so scary. The makeup kind of gives you this freedom to be as ugly and nasty as you want to be," she noted.

For Arterton, the most fun aspect of this film was its ability to combine both comedy and action. "It is violent at times, but it's also very funny as well. Achieving that was really fun, and I think audiences will respond to it," she noted.
