More than a pretty face
When British actress Gemma Arterton was picked to appear in the James Bond film "Quantum of Solace," and later to play a princess in "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," she suddenly attracted a lot of media attention.
One journalist knocked on her grandmother's door and asked if she had any childhood photos of the actress. The elderly woman obliged, and turned over dozens of embarrassing family photos. Although Arterton is now arguably one of the most beautiful women in the world, the memory of those unflattering photos appearing on the front pages of England's newspapers is still painful.
The 26-year-old actress winced as she spoke of her first brush with fame. "My grandmother was so proud of me before she died. So when a journalist came to the door, she handed over a massive family album. Of course, they selected the worst photos of me to use, including one of me at 6 when I was ill. Another one was of me at 14 when I was quite chunky. It still hurts to think about those photos," Arterton said.
Despite those embarrassing photos, the British star has become known for her beauty — something that at times annoys the classically trained actor who graduated from Britain's Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and has performed Shakespeare on stage. "Yes. Well, I'm not saying I'm a great beauty, but I'm definitely fighting this perception," she noted.
Arterton also understands, however, that her looks open doors and is delighted to have had the opportunity to appear in blockbusters like "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters." "I think there is a realistic part of me that understands that these roles don't come around very often. I never expected to do movies like this," she said.
Arterton is striving to be taken seriously as an actress and to perfect her talents. She explained: "I couldn't live with myself if I was going down the Jennifer Aniston route of constantly making romantic comedies. I'm sure she's very happy doing those movies, but my dream has always been to make great movies."
The actress also noted that no one is more critical of her performances than she is. "I'm tremendously critical. It may be 10 years before I appreciate my work in these action films. These films are so glamorous, and I'm so not glamorous," she said.
At the end of the day, though it was painful, she thinks the experience of seeing those unflattering photos of her younger self was helpful in some small way. "Whenever things are going well, I think about those photos, and that brings me back to Earth. I want to stay on track and achieve my goals," she concluded.
