Twenty-four year old Tainan girl Peng Hsiao-han is a graduate student majoring in music technology. More than a year ago, Peng started visiting localities of Tainan, recording announcements at Baoan train station in Jende District, the sound of chess and humming voices at Tiantan senior citizens’ care center in Sinhua District, the sound of the creek flowing upstream at Baihe Reservoir, a Yanshui blacksmith as well as the sound of salt being shoveled at salt farms in Cigu and jacana birds in Guantian District. With these sounds, Peng created a functional soundscape map of Tainan that sounds like a musical performance with local flavor and a distinctive sound.

Peng said that in order to introduce the content of the soundscape map and persuade others into liking it, she started looking for information half a year ago to understand the culture and stories behind the sounds. For example, she learned the origin of old place names, the silt formation situation at Baihe Reservoir and the ecology in the jacanas habitat, in the process gaining a bit more knowledge about her hometown.

Peng said that during the process of collecting the sounds, she learned that the city’s jacana birds’ feathers and sounds are different in summer and winter. It also turns out that the Anping fish market opens for business at 12am. After seeing these beautiful scenes of her hometown, she wanted others to experience it too.

In order to allow more people to hear the different sounds of Tainan, Peng plans to create a lighter paper version of the soundscape map. By simply waving a hand over Guantian or Baihe, it will be activated by ultrasound and play the sounds of the respective district.
