Taiwan's first snow of the year falls on Yushan
Taipei, Nov. 27 (CNA) Taiwan saw its first snowfall of the year Saturday on Yushan, also known as Jade Mountain, almost a month earlier than that in 2010. Snow began falling 5:40 p.m. Saturday and by 10:50 p.m., four to five centimeters had accumulated on the 3,952-meter peak, according to the Central Weather Bureau. As abundant moisture in a cloud band in southern Taiwan moved northward, a rather unusual phenomenon of the season, the first snow of the year arrived early, the bureau explained. Last year, the first snowfall on the mountain was on Dec. 16. "Autumn in Taiwan is usually much drier," said forecaster Lo Ya-yin. "This year has been a bit different since we are under greater influence from the southern cloud band." Generated from a tropical low, the wind circulation caused torrential rain in Taiwan in mid-November, with certain areas reporting severe crop loss. With warmer temperatures of around 1 degree Celsius and decreasing moisture due to start Sunday in mountain areas, it is unlikely that more snow will fall on Yushan this week, Lo said. Meanwhile, the weather pattern across the island is likely to be stable in the next few days, except that the cloud band might bring some showers to northern and eastern Taiwan, he said. Temperatures in the first half of the week will range from 19 degrees to 25 degrees in northern and eastern Taiwan, and 20 to 28 degrees in central and southern Taiwan, the bureau forecast.
