JOVOVICH'S 'EVIL' FAMILY

The first film was where Jovovich first worked with her husband, Paul W.S. Anderson. British director Anderson has had a huge role in every "Resident Evil" movie, personally directing the first, fourth and now fifth installments. For Jovovich, the franchise is synonymous with "family." She gets to work with her husband and often the same crew.

Despite being a veteran of special effects-driven movies, Jovovich confessed she knows little about what actually goes on behind the cameras. She leaves that to her husband. "I'm not an expert in technology. I will say that as an actor, I have certainly benefited from the many innovations that have been brought to filmmaking," she noted.

Regarding "Resident Evil: Retribution," Jovovich said that fans can expect an action extravaganza. "There's so much stuff that's not even in the trailer that's so amazing."

Unlike past movies, which all took place in more remote locations, Jovovich was happy to have the chance to travel around the world for this installment. "The really amazing thing in this movie is how global it is; it really takes place around the world. So I think what really stands out is the global scope of it."

The trailer for the new film hints that Jovovich's character, Alice, isn't the superhero she thought she was, showing her with a husband and child in a happy home as the zombie chaos sets in.

Jovovich said being an average woman is harder because all they do is die. "It was horrifying because, to be honest, I didn't really appreciate what it was like to be a superhero until I played a normal person within the 'Resident Evil' world. Normal people really have it bad," Jovovich said. "They just run and scream and get killed. It's so much easier just to have a machine gun, a cool outfit, to blow zombies away and then walk off looking really cool."

Director Anderson said the franchise is nearing an end, though he did not specify how many more movies he planned. "We really wanted to expand the franchise and make it much bigger for the fans who have been sticking with us," he said. "We really feel the franchise is reaching a climax, and we wanted to make this an epic. I wanted to make the first truly post-apocalyptic film."

LADY KILLERS

Women are the new action stars

When it comes to zombie-killing heroines, one actress reigns supreme. She, of course, is Milla Jovovich and she is returning to fight more undead monsters when "Resident Evil: Retribution" hits the big screen across the world this month.

Jovovich's status as the main star of such a popular action movie franchise is a powerful symbol of how times have changed in the film industry. Back in the 1980s, when Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone were the biggest stars in Hollywood, action movies were full of massive guys with even bigger muscles. Those days are long gone, however.

Today, moviegoers are more likely to see attractive female actresses kicking butt instead of muscular guys. Just this year, Scarlett Johansson appeared as a secret agent in "The Avengers," Jennifer Lawrence took part in a battle to the death in "The Hunger Games," Noomi Rapace fought aliens in "Prometheus" and Kristen Stewart took on an evil queen in "Snow White and the Huntsman." Even Pixar got in on the act by releasing a movie with the company's first female lead character — the tomboy Princess Merida in "Brave." So, to celebrate the rise of the female action heroine, we present our list of Hollywood's greatest ever female badasses.
